A Requiem for Celestials

9.0Jun 9, 2026125 min

Eresha, an acclaimed classical dancer, has spent decades building Aalayam, an arts institution shaped by her discipline and authority. The arrival of Anvesha, a young exchange student, unsettles the carefully ordered world she has created. As Eresha finds herself drawn into an unrequited love she cannot contain, the boundaries between teacher and student, art and desire, authority and vulnerability begin to shift. Set against the world of Indian classical dance, A Song for Eresha features an almost all-woman cast and more than a hundred classical dancers from across India.

*A Song for Eresha* is quite different from the kind of Indian films we usually get to see. The story is unusual, and the way classical dance and mythology have been woven into it is really interesting. The performances are very natural, especially the character of Eresha, whose emotions become increasingly complicated as the film progresses. The cinematography is beautiful, and some of the dance sequences are simply stunning. The film is a little slow in parts, but it keeps you involved because you're never quite sure where the story is heading. What I liked most is that it doesn't try to justify or condemn anyone. It leaves you to make up your own mind. Definitely worth watching, especially if you enjoy meaningful Indian cinema that tries something different.
