Jack is born with his heart frozen solid on the coldest day in history. A wise midwife saves him by replacing it with a cuckoo clock. Now Jack must abide by three rules to keep his mechanical heart safe: never touch the clock's hands, master his anger, and never fall in love. He tries his best, but when he meets a girl named Acacia he falls in love, threatening the delicate balance of his artificial heart.

Now Victorian Edinburgh could be a chilly place, but it was still unusual for a young lad to be born with his heart frozen solid! Fortunately for "Jack", he has "Madeleine" on hand to quickly improvise. She replaces it with a cuckoo clock that ticks quite loudly but that gets the job done. There are rules, though: he mustn't touch it; he mustn't get over-wrought and he must never fall in love. As a young child those problems don't really bother him, but as he ages and then encounters the fiery "Miss Acacia" this last instruction becomes increasingly difficult for him too comply with. The animated style here reminded me a little of "Coraline" (2009) but with plenty of individuality of it's own as this drama unfolds - complete with it's own little monochrome version of "Romeo and Juliet" that rather sums up the premiss of a romance that isn't so much forbidden by parents or convention as by nature. As we progress, we do wonder just what happiness can ever mean for "Jack" and of the value of his life without love, and those thoughts are delivered here without drifting into excesses of sentiment as they are frequently supported by some vibrant dances and an entertaining soundtrack taken straight from a musical theatre stage. This isn't just a straighforward and/or simplistic love story but instead quite a complex vehicle for emotions both happy and sad and peppered with some observations of life in a not always forgiving nineteenth century where science was in an enlightened ascendency, I really did quite enjoy this.
